Whole Biome is on a mission to help people improve physical and mental health by creating a new category of products that target the microbiome. We are researching, developing and commercializing a novel class of rationally-designed Live SynbioticsTM(probiotics + prebiotics) that have demonstrated clinical efficacy to treat conditions like metabolic syndrome, inflammation and neurodegeneration. ​Whole Biome has created proprietary pipelines to build a unique discovery platform that identifies key, novel bacterial strains and the prebiotics that feed them.

We are currently is seeking a Statistical Data Engineer/Scientist to join the Compute team. The person will contribute to the Whole Biome mission by working with meaningful data to generate impactful evidence and insights on our products that improve people’s health. The ideal candidate will have experience in successfully developing and deploying cloud-based bioinformatics services and prototyping robust statistical models. This position will interact closely with the R&D teams.

What You’ll Do:

  • Prototype, build, and maintain in-house software for high-throughput bioinformatics pipelines and web services
  • Prototype robust and scalable models based on statistical modeling in analytics languages (Python, R, C/C++)
  • Document, test and release software services in a continuous fashion
    Keep developing a comprehensive knowledge of fundamentals of statistical predictive modeling, machine learning, and data mining
  • Develop a deep understanding of the data we work with and foster learning and collaboration with colleagues using analytical tools

 

About You:

  • PhD (or Master) + > 4 years of experience in a quantitative data science discipline (e.g., statistics, computer science, engineering, biostatistics, biophysics)
  • Solid Object Oriented design and implementation skills (e.g., Python)
  • Experience in Unix/Linux environments using Bash, Make and related Unix tools
  • Familiarity with AWS is a big plus
  • Demonstrated entrepreneurial mindset and self-direction, ability to teach others and willingness to learn new techniques
  • Desire to work in a cross-functional, collaborative environment that values a balanced life

We are currently seeking a Data Scientist with experience in analyzing biological pathways in the context of biochemical/cell assay data as well as high-throughput genomics. This position will report to the Senior Staff Data Scientist and be responsible for supporting both bench and clinical scientists.

What You’ll Do:

  • Design, analyze, and interpret complex multivariate genomics pathway data in collaboration with lab biologists and fellow data scientists
  • Provide synthesis of actionable biological findings in presentations to internal stakeholders
  • Develop and contribute to data science software packages

 

About You:

  • PhD in Statistics, Computational Biology, Computer Science or a related field
  • Training in the interpretation of bacterial genomes and associated metabolic and/or signaling pathways
  • Strong understanding of bioinformatics algorithms, e.g., sequence assembly and alignment, genomic annotation
  • Solid knowledge and familiarity of statistical techniques, e.g., EDA, regression analysis, hypothesis testing and ML methods
  • 3 years industry experience in R
  • 3 years in Unix/Linux environments using Bash, Make and related Unix tools
  • 1 year of professional Python

We are currently seeking a Quality Control Technician to join our Quality Team. This position reports to our Sr. Manager, Quality. The ideal Quality Control Technician is a team builder who is comfortable with motivating, supporting and coaching team members towards compliance and quality standards. To be successful in this role, 2-3+ years of experience with Food/Beverage Manufacturing in Production or Quality Assurance is ideal. This team member will work closely with the production team to ensure the quality of all incoming materials and components, work in progress, and finished product. The successful candidate will need to be able to learn new systems quickly and adapt to changing needs as Whole Biome rapidly expands capabilities in terms of projects and processes. This is a dynamic, start-up environment that requires an understanding of collaboration, cooperation, and consideration for improving patient care. The successful employee must be able to roll up their sleeves and pivot quickly.

What You’ll Do:

  • Maintain and monitor facility food safety, sanitation and documentation
  • Maintain and monitor production equipment, including calibration and preventative maintenance
  • Conduct environmental monitoring and prepare lab samples for 3rd party testing
  • Verify quality of incoming materials including raw and packaging material
  • Conduct in-process QC testing and QC inspection of manufacturing area, at the beginning of production
  • Responsible for the correct recording and filing of all relevant record logs
  • Assist with other production documentation and data entry tasks
  • Perform document control and maintain the established food safety and quality management system including procedures and records for good manufacturing practices (GMPs), sanitation programs, and all food safety prerequisite programs
  • Document non-conformities and communicate between departments and follow up on corrective and preventive actions
  • Assist with training for food safety and quality related subjects
  • Assist with QC assay development
  • Other duties, as assigned

 

About You:

  • B.S. in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biology, or a related field with 2-3+ years work experience
  • Required familiarity with aseptic techniques used in microbiology
  • Required familiarity with developing/writing SOPs, documenting and tracking lot numbers and using lab management systems
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised and be a fully contributing member of a multi-functional, fast-paced, collaborative team environment
  • Experience implementing and prioritizing work across multiple projects under tight time constraints and deadlines
  • Familiar with Excel, Word, and Google apps
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time in a laboratory setting

We are currently seeking a Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to join the Molecular R&D and Clinical Assay team. The person will contribute to the Whole Biome mission through execution and development of molecular biology assays and protocols. The ideal candidate will have experience in qPCR, microbiology (especially anaerobic) and NGS library preparation. This position will interact closely with our Computational and Manufacturing teams.

What You’ll Do:

  • Execute molecular biology experiments and use in-house software tools to consider data, unsupervised
  • Support microbiology and molecular biology teams in multiple parallel projects
  • Execute assays both in clinical and R&D labs including DNA extraction, (RT-)qPCR assays and NGS library preparations
  • Execute anaerobic microbiological growth phenotyping assays using sterile technique
  • Prepare and maintain stocks of in-house prepared reagents
  • Work closely with Molecular R&D, Clinical Assay, and Computational teams
  • Responsible for personal and co-worker safety

 

About You:

  • B.A. in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biology, or related field
  • 1-5+ years experience in core facility, industrial molecular or microbiological role
  • Familiarity with DNA and RNA extraction, qPCR; familiarity with NGS
  • Familiarity with classical microbiology techniques, including culturing of anaerobic bacteria
  • Familiarity working closely with Senior Scientists to design, develop and optimize assays
  • Comfort (and preferably experience) in handling human samples: stool, skin and blood
  • Familiarity with developing/writing SOPs, documenting and tracking lot numbers and using lab management systems
  • Belief in transparency and open communication and the ability to use interpersonal relationships to improve and enable those around them
